For those of you who just met me here at ABCD Design, here is a quick run down on 2009! Between moving, job loss, death in the family, and living like a nomad in 2009, we felt as though someone put us on a moon walk and decided to cut our cord.
Now that we have that out of the way – I’ll remind you that we’re quickly closing in on the 2 year anniversary of when our stuff went into storage. Today is our fourth wedding anniversary. (Yay!) But when you do the math, what that means is that for half of our marriage we have been practically homeless. Nothing like having five different addresses in ’09 to make one feel unrooted. Needless to say, I am working my tail off to clean out all the construction dust so that I can unpack our dishes and get to cooking on a regular basis again!
Granted, we bought the house in June (we camped on the floor all Summer) and officially moved all our belongings to the house Labor day weekend of 2010, but did so without the kitchen being installed. The kitchen is the heart of the home – so I have to admit, I haven’t quite settled in.
I have not been keeping house or hanging the art like I would if we were living here. The dishes and most of our wedding gifts remain in boxes out in the barn. They’re awaiting a soft, clean place to land. Next week, I’ll be up to my elbows in lemon Joy and soft, white, lint-free towels. Yeah, I know. Just let me know if you want to lend a hand. winkwink
Above, you see my kitchen cabinets the day they arrived at our house. It took from November 10th until the Friday before I left for Las Vegas to finish the installation. No, the workers didn’t work everyday. It happened in fits and spurts of activity. That time included a screw-up on the dimensions of the refrigerator cabinet, a change in plan for the backsplash, and a two week wait for the countertops to be made that straddled the Christmas and New Year which actually made it take three weeks. All in all, our kitchen installation was a three month project!
So here it is, it’s the dead of Winter with six feet of snow on the ground and I am putting my finishing touches on The Country House. I am cleaning every corner of each room in a meticulous (read OCD) way. It’s taking days, but I want to get us started off on the right foot here. Boy, for a gal who writes a blog about making a house a home…that homemaking part was a long time coming. May the nesting fun begin!
For those of you who have been here through the trials and tribulations, thanks for reading ABCD Design!
