We have spent the entire last week in Northern Michigan at my family’s vacation house. When I tell you that it is beautiful there, it’s an understatement. It is completely beyond belief gorgeous. Mr. D and I stay in the “carriage house” over the garage. It’s got a lounge area, a bathroom and a kitchenette – however, even with those lush amenities – we spend the majority of our time in the kitchen of the main house. It’s just so cosy and it happens to be where all the action is. The view is superb and the kitchen is outfitted to the highest standard. I can’t help myself. I find myself longing to bake at every moment of each and every day. I am certain these photos below do “Up North” absolutely no justice.
There is something about the air, the music played on the radio, the fresh produce and the special places to visit that make it such a special place. Long afternoons out on the deck overlooking the lake – I mean seriously, it’s an amazing time.
Speaking of baking every moment of everyday and about being lucky … I was lucky enough to run across The Hip Hostess on Twitter. She is a super sweet lady and when I noticed her location was Northern Michigan – an afternoon “tweet-up” was on short order. On Monday afternoon I had the pleasure of meeting The Hip Hostess (Lovely, indeed!) and her super savvy, beautiful daughter at the American Spoon Cafe in the town of Petoskey. The Hip Hostess is blessed to live in and run her successful apron business from Northern Michigan.
Boy-oh-boy, I think The Hip Hostess is one creative girl. Completely cute, right? No wonder her business is taking off – these aprons are gorgeous! She shared great news with me during our coffee date. The Hip Hostess has started wholesaling to stores. Soon, you’ll start to see these cuties pop-up in the finest of shops! If you can’t wait for them to make it to your favorite kitchen store, order one online at her site ‘The Hip Hostess.’
On Tuesday night Mr. D and I drove back downstate. I am working on the Walnut Street Project again. I miss Northern Michigan almost as much as I miss New York City! If you haven’t gotten my point, that part of the state is my Heaven. Speaking of Heaven…
Last weekend I made several batches of muffins and scones. I delivered them (perfectly packaged with colorful tissue and placed in a pretty box – of course – winkwink!) to our neighbors with crème fraîche, lemon curd and American Spoon Fruit. Stay tuned tomorrow to ABCD Design for my very versatile scone recipe. You’ll stir them up in a flash – over, and over, and over again in all their different variations. Sometimes you’ll do what I did and be inspired to do multiple batches in one afternoon!
