Q. What is Bespoke Stationery Design and how does it differ from custom or semi-custom design?
A. The word bespoke itself is derived from the verb to bespeak, to “speak for something”, in the specialized meaning “to give order for it to be made.” By describing something as “Bespoke” it means the item is custom-made to the buyer’s specification.
Historically, the term was only applied to tailored clothing, and apparel involving measurement and fitting. The distinguishing points of bespoke tailoring are the buyer’s total control over the fabric used, the features and fit, and the way the garment should be made. More generally, bespoke describes a high degree of customization, and involvement of the end-user in the production of the goods.
Bespoke clothing is traditionally drafted from scratch for the customer and so differs from ready-to-wear (or off-the-peg), which is factory made in finished condition in standardized sizes, and from made-to-measure, produced to order from an existing block pattern. Bespoke clothing is generally associated with high quality construction.
When setting up my business, I applied the very same ideas from fashion to my stationery designs.
Bespoke Stationery Wardrobes:
I design bespoke fittings of entire wedding stationery “wardrobes.”
*Your BESPOKE wardrobe will include a belly band, rsvp and matching envelope, wedding invitation, celebration invitation, accommodation/travel card, program design, favor tags, custom made rubber stamp designs a bespoke thank-you note and any other specialty items you request*
FYI: designers of “custom” stationery call it a “suite” and will include an invitation, rsvp card, and envelopes. They have a list of designs and will allow you to pick one (possibly a change of color option) and they will plug your name and wedding date into the design.
Now do you see the difference -?-
The “Ready-To-Write” or “Off-The-Peg” Collection:
Supplemental pieces for your bespoke stationery wardrobe may be designed in a bespoke fashion, or if you are looking to save some money on the “extras” they may be selected from the ready-to-write collection of pre-existing designs.
I have “pre-patterned” designs for holiday cards, brunch invitations, welcome or rehearsal dinner invitations, bridal shower invitations, baby announcements, change of address cards, you name it.
We can easily change colors and names for a semi-custom fit. This option works in the same fashion as what other designers call “custom.”
